The Opportunity:

Ohalo Genetics is seeking a motivated Research Associate for hands-on tissue culture and molecular biology. The successful candidate will be passionate, well-organized, detail-oriented, and work independently as well as in a team environment. The candidate will spend approximately 60% of their time on basic plant tissue culture techniques and the remaining 40% on assisting technical staff with routine lab, greenhouse, and office work including tissue sampling, assays, maize pollination, data entry, and data management.

Responsibilities:

  • Basic lab operations such as preparation and sterilization of plant growth media, sample prep, and assays such as PCR/qPCR.
  • Organization of timing for multiple concurrent experiments at different stages in tissue culture to ensure timely transfers for best experimental outcomes.
  • Maintain a clean working environment for plant tissue culture
  • Maintain detailed and organized records of media preparation, plant tissue culture experiments, and experimental results using an electronic notebook
  • Work with other Research Associates and Scientists to execute experiments, troubleshoot and develop solutions when problems occur, conduct analyses, and record data
  • Participate in scientific discussions and present research outcomes

Candidate Profile:

  • An Associate’s degree in Biology, Microbiology, Agricultural Sciences, or related field with 2+ years of laboratory experience OR a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Microbiology, Agricultural Sciences, or related field
  • Safety consciousness
  • Ability to take a proactive approach to routine tasks and work independently
  • Ability to accurately follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to ask clarifying questions
  • Must be detail-oriented, well-organized, and good at record keeping
  • Positive attitude and good interpersonal skills
  • Passionate about learning and desire to make a meaningful impact in breeding and production systems
  • Interest in growing as part of a team

Desired skills/experience:

  • Experience in a lab environment
  • Experience working in sterile conditions
  • Experience with basic molecular biology
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Powerpoint, Word) OR Google Suite (Mail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, and Drive)
